Privacy Policy for [Website Name]

Last updated: …

1. Introduction and scope

This Privacy Policy explains how [Website Name] ([Website URL]), operated by [Owner / Company Name], collects, uses and protects information when you visit the website. By using [Website Name], you agree to the practices described in this policy.

This policy applies only to information collected through [Website Name]. It does not apply to information collected offline or through other websites.

2. Information we collect

We may collect the following information:

  • Information your browser sends automatically, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you visit (see Log data).
  • Information stored in cookies and similar technologies (see Cookies and web beacons).
  • Information you send us directly, for example when you contact us by email.

3. Log data

Like most websites, [Website Name] uses standard server log files. These may record IP addresses, browser type, internet service provider, date and time stamps, referring and exit pages, and the number of clicks. This information is used to analyse trends, administer the site and understand how the site is used. It is not used on its own to identify you.

4. Cookies and web beacons

[Website Name] uses cookies — small files stored in your browser — and similar technologies such as web beacons. They help the site work, remember preferences, measure usage and, where advertising is shown, deliver and measure ads.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Some parts of the site may not work as intended if cookies are disabled.

5. Google AdSense and the DoubleClick DART cookie

Google is a third-party vendor that may serve ads on [Website Name]. Google's use of advertising cookies, including the DoubleClick DART cookie, enables it and its partners to serve ads to visitors based on their visits to this and other websites on the internet. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies as applicable.

You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info.

To learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

6. Third-party advertising partners

Third-party ad servers or ad networks may use technologies such as cookies, JavaScript or web beacons in the ads and links that appear on [Website Name]. They may automatically receive your IP address when this happens. These technologies are used to measure the effectiveness of advertising and to personalise the ads you see.

[Website Name] has no access to or control over cookies used by third-party advertisers. Please consult each partner's own privacy policy for their practices and opt-out options. [List your advertising partners, if any besides Google.]

7. Data retention

We keep personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law.

[Describe how long you keep each type of data — for example comments, newsletter subscriber details and server logs.]

8. Data security

We use reasonable measures to protect information from unauthorised access, alteration or loss. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. External links

[Website Name] may link to other websites. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those sites, and we encourage you to read their privacy policies.

10. Changes to this privacy policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes take effect when the updated policy is posted on this page, and the date at the top will be revised.

11. Contact us

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy, contact [Owner / Company Name] at [Contact Email]. [Owner / Company Name] is based in [Country].

How to publish your privacy policy

  1. Generate it. Fill in your details and tick only the services and clauses that apply to your site.
  2. Review every section. Replace bracketed placeholders such as the retention periods and advertising partners, and remove anything that doesn’t match how your site works.
  3. Publish it at /privacy-policy (or a similar URL) as a normal page on your site.
  4. Add a footer link labelled “Privacy Policy” so it’s reachable from every page.
  5. Link it where you collect data — comment forms, newsletter sign-ups and contact forms.
  6. Keep it accurate. Update it, and its date, whenever you add a new ad network, analytics tool or form.

For an example of a published policy, see this site’s own privacy policy.

What AdSense publishers need to disclose

Google’s policies require AdSense publishers to tell visitors that third parties, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on prior visits, and how to opt out of personalised advertising. The generator always includes that section, with links to Google Ads Settings, aboutads.info and Google’s explanation of how it uses data from partner sites. Depending on where your visitors are, laws such as the GDPR or CCPA/CPRA may require more, including consent for non-essential cookies.

Once your policy is live, run the AdSense approval audit — it checks that a privacy policy is linked from your homepage. The audit can only find the policy after you’ve published it and linked it on your site. Our guide to privacy policies for AdSense explains the requirements in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

Does AdSense require a privacy policy?

Yes. Google's publisher policies require sites showing AdSense ads to have a privacy policy that discloses the use of third-party advertising cookies and how visitors can opt out. Laws in many places add their own requirements.

Is a generated privacy policy legally valid?

It's a starting point, not legal advice. A policy is only accurate if it describes what your site actually does, so review every section, fill in the bracketed placeholders, and consult a qualified professional if you're unsure.

Do you store what I type into the generator?

No. The policy is generated entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our server.

Where should I publish my privacy policy?

On its own page, such as /privacy-policy, linked from your site's footer on every page. Link it from comment forms, newsletter sign-ups and anywhere else you collect information.

Which clauses should I include?

Include GDPR if you have visitors from the EEA, UK or Switzerland, CCPA/CPRA if the California law applies to you, and the COPPA statement if your site isn't aimed at children under 13. Only enable services, like Google Analytics or a newsletter, that your site really uses.
